The front cover is designed to be the “hook,” and the back cover the “sinker.” The two sides work together to create a compelling and persuasive message for the reader.
Our job as book cover designers is to create curiosity on the front cover and then continue to speak to the reader’s interest on the back cover.
Our process is a bit different than that of other book cover designers. Our creativity and ideas never surmount the author’s vision they set with their writing. Instead, it honors and supports their voice. Our cover design process is a collaborative and interactive journey that helps authors clarify their message and bring visual life to their books.
We start off with a Zoom call so we can get to know you and your book. (And you can get to know us too!) This call takes about 30 minutes and is scheduled at your convenience.
It’s go time! We’ll research other books in your genre and category, combine that with the ideas generated in our Zoom call, and begin to work on your cover design.
In 2-3 weeks, depending on our schedule, you’ll receive the first round of cover concepts.
After you’ve reviewed the initial concepts, we schedule a Zoom call to go over the designs. This is the interactive part! During the call, we make changes together in real time, or we discuss changes we will make offline.
We’re done tweaking the cover, and you have a final design you love! From there, if we’re working with you for just your cover, we’ll work on the back cover and spine and create final files for upload.
If we’re handling your interior book design, we’ll get started on that and then work on the back cover and spine later in the process.
Some books are easy to read, and some are not. Why?
Simply, it’s the design. Readability is the most critical factor in interior book design, and we take that very seriously. For readability, we choose the typeface, size, and alignment based on the size of the book and readability standards.
That’s not to say there is no “design” in the formatting process. The second most crucial aspect of the interior is how the book looks and reads.
Interior formatting is a balance between functionality and beauty. That combination should not be overlooked or downplayed.
Our interior design process is interactive, intuitive, and collaborative, and like our cover design process, honors the author and their writing.
When we’re ready to start your interior, we kick it off with a Zoom where we review your manuscript and ask questions about your vision for the design.
We create the entire interior design, including body typeface selection, chapter start pages, subheads, header, footer, page numbers, and all other relevant elements in your manuscript, and send you a first draft.
We schedule a Zoom call to go over the designs. This is the interactive part. Together, we make final decisions on typefaces, layout, headers, footers, and other elements, all on Zoom in real time.
Our interior design process has been honed and allows for easy changes to any element in the interior with only a few mouse clicks.
We now complete the interior layout by manually correcting and fixing spacing issues, such as widows and orphans, page by page. Then, you do a final proof of the completed book layout. At this stage, you are making small changes to the content, if any, and proofing for any design/layout mistakes. After all final changes are made, a print-ready PDF is provided.
An eBook is an essential component of your publishing plan. Since many eBook readers do not read paperbacks, having an eBook version of your book will help you to capture some of the Reader audience.
Using the interior design file as the starting point, we format your eBook to the latest industry standards including adding a table of contents (if not already present), formatting images, headings, footnotes/endnotes, chapter starts, and hyperlinks for the best eBook reading experience. Then, we create an epub 3.0 file which can be uploaded to any eBook distribution platform, including KDP, Kobo and Draft2Digital.
